Beijing denies blocking rare earth exports

China Wednesday denied a New York Times report stating the government has extended cuts in rare earth export quotas to include the US and Europe, in addition to Japan.

“Reports published by some media saying China will continue to cut rare earth export quotas for next year are groundless and purely wrong,” the Ministry of Commerce said in a statement faxed to the Global Times. “China will continue to supply the world with rare earths.”

Rare earths, a collection of 17 elements, are used in high-tech products ranging from flat-screen televisions to lasers to hybrid cars.
